CHALET originates from the Swiss-Romand dialect (or Arpitan) word chalèt,

which referred to a herdsman’s hut or seasonal dairy farm building in the Swiss Alps and Savoy region.

Derived from the Old Franco-Provençal chaslet (a diminutive of chasel or “farmhouse”) and rooted in the Latin word casa (“house” or “shelter”), the term evolved to define the rustic, wooden, slope-roofed mountain homes commonly associated with Switzerland.
